This is not the first time that Romer has called out people in the economics profession for views that differ from his own. He did it in the 2015 American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings with an article titled “ Mathiness in the Theory of Economic Growth.” In that piece, Romer doesn’t call for drumming people out of the profession. The American economist Paul Romer has recently written of “mathiness”, by analogy with “truthiness”, a term coined by American talk show host Stephen Colbert. Truthiness presents narratives which are not actually true, but consistent with the world view of the person who spins the story.

Statistical claims should be robust, match everyday language as much as possible, and be transparent about methods. Romer seems to be upset that Boldrin and Levine are calling this "perfect competition". Which is sort of right, because it's not. It's limit pricing. But it doesn't make the model wrong. Romer seems to be upset that there's some insinuation that "perfect competition" models can explain innovation even when ideas are non-excludable.
